L’Incoronazione di Poppea was first performed in 1642 when opera as an art form had existed for a bare 20 years.

A tale of lust, ambition and betrayal. From the first it has been praised for its drama as much as for its exquisite music. It is Monteverdi’s last and arguably greatest work, a unified masterpiece of unprecented depths and individuality.

Although we have mounted several Handel productions, (Rodelinda, Riccardo Primo, Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Theodora), Purcell (Dido and Aeneas) and Glűck (Orfeo) we have never staged Monteverdi before though we have always wanted to. At last, the moment is ripe for us to perform it with a baroque orchestra and at baroque pitch under the direction of baroque specialist, Yeo Yat-Soon.

Here is a clip from the very fine production at Teatro Real, Madrid.
